The goals
The economy and society are increasingly facing the consequences of climate change. Germany aims to reduce emissions of climate-damaging gases such as CO2 by 55% by 2030. Measures to achieve this are enshrined in the Climate Action Program 2030, with which the German government is implementing the German Climate Action Plan 2050.
The need to implement measures affects all sectors and applies to the energy sector, industry, buildings, transport, agriculture and forestry, land use and waste management. If sufficient targets are not achieved, the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) estimates the economic damage that could be caused by climate change to total almost 800 billion euros by 2050.
In addition to financial risks, global warming is causing extreme weather events such as dry spells and storms to occur more frequently and more severely. According to the organization Germanwatch, almost half a million people have died in over 12,000 such events over the past 20 years. There is therefore a need for action at all levels of sustainable management.
